Practical Crocheter and I have written a lot here over the years about foundation stitches in crochet. She wrote step-by-step instructions for a wide variety of foundation stitches. I made a video about foundation single, half double, and double crochet a little over a year ago. I also wrote about how to use foundation stitches for shaping in a project. And we've used various foundation stitches in a variety of our patterns (Basic S2S Hat, Bottoms Up Waffle Stitch Hat, Classic Mittens, and Octagonal Romper).
Once you've mastered foundation stitch basics, you can move on to foundation pattern stitches. When pattern stitches are simply a matter of alternating among various basic stitches, translating them into a foundation pattern stitch is fairly straightforward, but when a pattern stitch involves skipping stitches and having multiple stitches in one stitch, the process is a little more complicated, and that's what this video demonstrates.
We have a few patterns now that use foundation versions of shell stitch (Symmetry Scarf and soon the Sideway Shell Hat) or scalloped V stitch (V stitches separated by single crochets, like you'll find in the Folded Eyelet Cowl). Each of those patterns includes step-by-step written instructions, but sometimes a demonstration is useful. So whether you need a little help getting started on one of those patterns or just want to try out the technique, hop over to YouTube, and check out the new tutorial!
