New Pattern! Elegant Ascot (Knitted)

A classic "little old lady" knitting project is the ascot--a short piece, usually made in garter stitch, that's just long enough to wrap around the neck with a little leftover on either end.  About 3 or 4 inches inches from either end is a loop, and when you wear the ascot, you tuck one end through the opposite loop. It's a quick and easy project that's interesting to make, without requiring much yarn or effort, and has a practical use when done.

This project is the same idea, but I've made it larger and in lattice stitch for a more luxurious, generous look and feel. Made on big needles (US 11), the Elegant Ascot is still quick and easy, but it's also cozy and squishy, and it drapes around the neck almost like a cowl. The traditional ascot is usually under two feet long, and this version is almost 3 feet. However, I've kept the yardage to 110, so that you can use it to show off a single skein of nice yarn in an aran or chunky (shown) weight.

For added loft and softness, that chunky yarn is stranded with some lace weight mohair or brushed alpaca.  Alternatively, you could just make the whole thing in a single strand of chunky mohair or chunky mohair stranded with something shiny, like a coordinating ribbon yarn, to add some depth to the color. If you have enough yarn, you can also make the neck section longer for something that really feels more like a cowl or can double as a hood/ear warmer.
