Pattern Review: The Pioneer Braid Scarf

I just finished making the Pioneer Braid Scarf. It's a free pattern from Catherine Ryan at the Hither and Yarn blog. It's a really fun, modular pattern, and it's easy to make. If you are trying to work up to trying entrelac, the Pioneer Braid Scarf is a good project to start with.

The pattern itself is well-written and easy to follow. It assumes you'll use worsted weight yarn with a gauge of 4 stitches per inch in garter stitch, but it doesn't specify a needle size. I made the scarf using the yarn leftover from a twin size blanket I made last year. The yarn is a heavy worsted--the Hobby Lobby brand of cheap acrylic. So, based on my prior experience making the Chanterelle Scarf in a similar yarn weight, I used size 10.5 needles and made it a bit wider than the pattern intended.  While 10.5 is a big needle for a worsted, the fabric it makes in garter or 1x1 ribbing is delightfully squishy.

I absolutely plan to use this pattern again. You should try it, too!
