A Useful Resource

If you every find yourself needing to look up an abbreviation or a refresher on how to read a pattern, the Craft Yarn Council of America (CYCA) website is a really handy resource. Every so often, I find myself heading over there to confirm what abbreviation to use for what when I'm writing patterns. Their website is well-designed, easy to navigate, and clear to read.

If you crochet, here are the crochet abbreviations, which also include the differences between American and British terminology, and how to read a crochet pattern. They also have a page on reading crochet charts.

And if you knit, this page has knitting abbreviations, including American and Canadian terminology, and this one includes how to read a knitting pattern. Like their crochet section, CYCA also has a page on reading knitting charts, but they also have a page on reading knitted cable charts.

And since CYCA is an all-around useful sort of organization, you can also find information on different yarn weights, size charts for both hooks and knitting needles, how to read yarn labels and care instructions, standard body measurements, and plenty of resources for teaching yourself and others.
